Is my child ready for overnight Camp? Is Camp Varsity right for my child?

Camp is an incredible way for children to practice independence, gain confidence, develop new skills, forge new friendships and grow in many ways. Your child however may or may not be ready for camp, no matter their age.

We're here to work with parents and caregivers to make sure camp is the right fit for your camper before enrollment.

Safe participation and a camp positive experience requires certain physical, emotional, social and mental abilities. While our staff are caring and supportive, they aren't specifically trained to work with campers who have specific special needs, including some emotional, behavioral, physical or social challenges.

Before submitting an application for your camper, please read the list below as it describes expectations of all campers during their time at Camp Varsity. Please consider this as a baseline guide for participating in our summer program:

  • Has good health physically and emotionally

  • Maintains personal health and hygiene independently and cares for basic needs: self-sufficient at showering, eating, doing hair and dressing and changing themselves, and using the restroom without assistance.

  • Has spent at least one night away from home

  • Comfortable in nature spaces and outdoor settings: weather, bugs, animals

  • Able to be on feet for long periods of time throughout the day

  • Comfortable with and enjoys community shared areas with minimal personal space

  • Respectful of peers and authority

  • Practices self-regulation and self-control in a developmentally appropriate way

  • Practices effective verbal and written communication

  • Practices keeping track of and maintaining personal belongings

  • Able to self entertain and/or be quiet for a period of time (our rest is an hour long)

  • Your child wants to come to Camp Varsity and you feel confident your child will have a great time at camp!

If your child has complex health conditions, serious illness, or chronic disease or conditions and you are considering camp, please reach out to us to discuss and determine if safe and appropriate levels of care, management, and accommodations are available, including staff trained and experienced in specific disease groups and management.
